“I’m writing ’bout the book I read
I have to sing about the book I read
I’m embarrassed to admit it hit the soft spot in my heart
When I found out you wrote the book I read…”

–Talking Heads, The Book I Read

Welcome back to the Creative Life Adventure.

These are hard times for writers. College enrollment is declining, attention spans are shrinking, streaming services are hypnotizing us, and the technocracy is trying to replace content creators with energy-guzzling AI. (The AI replacement effort is more disturbing for how many consumers are embracing this garbage.) While these events have been transpiring, I’ve published four works of fiction, and based on my sales figures, you probably haven’t read them. Even by my own standards of self-criticism, I believe these stories are entertaining and I want more people to see them. You can find a little more detail of each book under the My Books tab at the top of the page.

Some major life changes have persuaded me to expand my readership by honoring one of the promises of the Internet: elimination of digital scarcity. It doesn’t cost anything to “print” additional ebooks, so it’s hard to justify some of the prices charged by major publishers and platforms. (Actually, rising rents and grocery chain profit margins and their disconnect from digital scarcity is the primary justification.) Regardless of the greater cultural forces at work, all four of my books are currently available free at those online booksellers that allow zero pricing. (That rules our Crapazon, which is probably for the best.) These days, Smashwords is my recommended site for ebooks. One downside to this strategy is that print editions, my preferred format, are no longer available. It’s not my first choice, but it’s a characteristic of the digital world we’ve created for ourselves. Either way, I hope you’ll give my (free!) books a chance, and happy reading!

“Dear Sir or Madam will you read my book,
It took me years to write will you take a look,
Based on a novel by a man named Lear,
And I need a job,
So I want to be a paperback writer…”
–The Beatles, Paperback Writer
