Friday Food for Thought: February 25, 2022

1) Journals:

If you journal as much as I do, or use notebooks for other creative purposes, I’ve recently started using these great notebooks from a seller on Etsy. They are on the small side, only 60 pages each, but the price per page is less than a lot of notebooks I’ve seen from department stores or office supply chains. I’m happy with the quality and a single one takes up almost no space in my backpack. I like the lined A5 style with Kraft cover, but there are a variety of styles and colors to choose from.

2) Exile, Italian Style:

I’ve just finished watching the 1979 Italian film Christ Stopped at Eboli. The film is not set in Eboli, and Christ is notably absent – this absence is significant to the film’s premise. The film is adapted from Carlo Levi‘s account of his exile to isolated villages in southern Italy for speaking out against Mussolini’s fascist government in the 1930s. For a film that is so deliberately paced, Christ Stopped at Eboli evokes strong passions and raises profound moral dilemmas. Don’t settle for the 150-minute theatrical version, but hold out for the 220-minute version that first aired on Italian television and is now part of the Criterion Collection.

3) Sound waves:

Zoom describes their H2N Handy Recorder as “the workhorse of field recorders,” and after using one for two years, I believe it. While reviewing a series of recordings I’ve made for a possible future blog post about ambient noise, I’m reminded that the H2N is not only easy to use, but produces recordings of astonishing quality for such a small device. Just insert an SD card and 2 AA batteries (I use Energizer rechargeables), and you’re ready to go.

4) Freedom, Not Fossil Fuels:

A transportation system that relies almost entirely on cars is not only foolish but is literally destroying the world. Limited (or no) choice, personal finance, public health, climate change, even Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, are all influenced by a no-freedom car-centric culture. Follow The War on Cars on Twitter for a daily education on the subject. The account not only links to their own podcast, but introduces us to books and articles that fill in all the details. Spoiler alert: Electric cars are not the answer.
